Hi again,
If I understand it correctly, the concerns can be narrowed down to the following:
1. Should I buy V3 and later update to V4 or should I wait for V4?
To answer that, it depends on when you want to provision the service. If you want to do it right now, with all features, then you should buy it. If you don't care for the paid features then you should don't buy it and go for the Chevereto-Free product, simple as that.
If you plan to have a Chevereto V4 installation in the future and you wonder which is the cheapest way to get there, it depends on how many paid features you really need. If you need all what is considered now a paid feature then the cheapest path will be to buy V3 then upgrade V4. If you only need a couple of paid features then I believe that V4 could be cheaper, but it all depends case to case and it also depends on the future offering of third-party software providers. In this case, I'm afraid that I can't point you in the absolute cheapest path.
Chevereto 3 has LTS until Nov 2022 and beyond that date I'm sure that there will be plenty installations still online so there should be a community around users of that edition in the case you don't want to ever upgrade to V4.
V4 will be released way before the Chevereto 3 LTS ends. But there's no date yet. You can check the nearly live work in progress here: https://github.com/Chevereto/chevere (daily hourly updates of the current work being made).
I think that I will know the release date when I have like three months left or something like that. Sorry for not having a concrete date, but we work focused in the quality not in the deadlines.
2. How much will V4 going to cost?
Chevereto V4 will be both free and Open Source, with the option to purchase a paid package containing a selection of must-have paid features like for example, External Storage. The goal is to monetize the software as a subcription service where we can add new components which you can freely pick and use it in your installation. We also want to sell one-time plugins/themes and create a store where third-party developers can also offer their software (both free and paid).
Chances are that V4 will become cheaper on the long run as more developers jump in the platform. Since our business is the software itself, we will encourage developers with extremely low fees, which will make our software more compelling and cheaper to customize.
The exact price of the thing is still unknown and I don't want to name a price in case I have to change it due to the market trends. Of course that I've a number in my head, a number that I will love to share, but it will be very irresponsable to mention it. Our goal is to make self-hosting feasible for everybody, we strongly believe in provide that freedom and the cheaper we can do it the better for our goal.
3. How does V3 compares to V4?
Probably the biggest difference is the quality. While on the surface both editions will achieve similar functionality, V4 architecture is far superior which makes it cheaper to work with and more reliable. As a consumer, you aren't affected by that difference directly but it affects how the software is delivered and developed which ends up affecting you anyway.
V4 is a headless software focused in delivering an API. With CLI commands and a lot of stuff that V3 totally lacks of. Is easier, faster, tested and we even want to start doing continous delivery.
Regarding V4 features, the idea is that all what is now considered a paid feature will become part of the base system (free, Open Source), but in the long term. A process like this requires years. A lot of time is required to replace the paid offering with new stuff, it will be a gradual process. In other words, while we are making free/standard something like "Social followers", at the same time we will add something new (paid) like automatic image recognition.
The idea is to carry this process all the way and always be able to work in something new. We get bored doing the same thing over and over, we want to push new stuff.
4. No bs, how can I get V4 cheap?
Try to buy it (or upgrade it) on the release day. We will offer early bird prices and for existing license owners we will offer additional discounts on top of the early bird. I don't know how much will be the actual discount, I just know that we will make a nice, fair and good offer, as always... And if we are making a new software major version, believe me that we will put all our efforts into make the transition extremely attractive.
(sorry for the long post, I tried to reply all what I just read in this topic). |
